SJCC CAMPUS STORE

how the store gets books

Each semester the store begins returning unsold textbooks after the first six weeks of classes.  By the end of the semester, the store will have almost no books on the shelves. IT IS IMPORTANT TO BUY BOOKS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, THEY MAY NOT BE AVAILABLE LATER IN THE SEMESTER.

  • Ordering books begins with the FACULTY REQUISITION. The store can do nothing until the requesition (order) is received.  Deadlines are set early so that the store can buy books back from students during finals week each semester and have more time to get used books from used book suppliers.
  • Books bought from students are first priority.  The store allocates the maximum number of books possible to buy from students before ordering from any other source.  Students get 50% of purchase price for requisitioned books.  Some books may not be eligible for sell back because the total needed has been reached.  The earlier books are brought in during sell back, the better chance there is for getting the higher amount for books.  Books for which there is no requisition or for which the allocation has been met, may be sold back for wholesale prices which are substantially lower.  The store does not set these prices, they are set by the wholesale buyer and are shipped to the buyer.
  • Books bought from used book companies.  After buyback, the needed quantities and titles for which the store has requistions are sent on electronic lists to each used book company each day.
  • Books ordered from publishers.  For those books not available from used book companies or student sell back, new books are ordered to finish buying books needed to meet the estimated number of books that will be sold.
